Portraits – Fashion Designer Marco Marco

by christina

Occupation: Fashion designer

Address: 1641 North Las Palmas Avenue, Hollywood, CA 90028; www.marcomarco.net

Why we like him: Music’s hottest stars rely on this man when it comes to looking outrageously fabulous. Katie Perry, Fergie, Black Eyed Peas, and Britney Spears are just a few of his loyal customers who rely on his experimental eye for their stage outfits. Marco makes everything in-house at his studio on Las Palmas, where he’s been for the past ten years. If it’s gotta be extreme, it’s gotta be Marco. My personal favorite: those cupcake bras from Katie Perry’s California Gurls video. (More about Marco’s world after the jump).

Where are you from? I was born in Massachusetts, raised in Laguna Niguel/ Anaheim.

How long have you lived here? 12 years!

Where do you live in LA? My house is in Miracle Mile but I live in my studio in Hollywood.

Favorite restaurant in your hood: My friends and I love and frequent Loteria Grill on Hollywood Boulevard. It’s close, the food is always good, and the margaritas are great!

This place makes the best coffee/tea: I don’t drink coffee but JuiceMaids, a local delivery service brings us amazing fresh pressed juices that I can’t live without.

Coolest store: Artstring Boutique on Cherokee is totally inspiring.  The owner knits and sells everything in the store herself and I always find great gifts.

And that’s what I bought there: The last thing I got is a pair of super soft hand knit, fingerless gloves. If it wasn’t 100 degrees out, I’d wear them everyday!

First three adjectives that come to mind when describing your neighborhood: Authentic, filthy, fabulous.

Favorite LA artist: Jennifer Sindon is my favorite living artist. She is severely private and very few people are aware of how incredible she is.

When I need a time-out, I go to: The alley behind my studio is my hideout but I also love walking down Hollywood Boulevard. It’s so crowded with tourists and loud, you literally disappear.

The one thing that’s a must-see in LA: You must see the street performers at Hollywood & Highland. It’s the only part of town where  you will see Snow White and Catwoman eating sushi or Spiderman bumming a ciggie off of Shrek.

Why did you pick this particular location for your business: Rick Owens and Michele Lamy were in my studio/showroom for 10 years before me.  I’ve been here for almost 10 years now and may never leave. The space has such an amazing energy that I’ve never felt anywhere else before. I’m on hallowed Hollywood ground and you might have to pry it away from my lifeless hands.
