Lucas Murgida‘s The Oracle at Charlie James Gallery: Become your own oracle at Murgida’s one night performance. Murgida explores different paths of life and their inherent truths about our society by entering professions ranging from busboy to locksmith to yoga teacher. He then transforms  his “research” into a body of work. July 31st in front of Charlie James Gallery at 975 Chung King Road, LA, CA 90012. Begins after night falls and goes on for several hours… (Nancy Rubins at Gagosian and documentary photography at the Getty after the jump.)

Nancy Rubins at Gagosian Gallery: Don’t miss the chance to see this artist’s work on display in LA (it’s a first). Her giant sculptures made completely out of aluminum kayaks is a turn away from the colorful installation at Lincoln Center she did four years ago. On a personal note: I can’t believe Rubins grew up in the same tiny town in Tennessee where I spent part of my adolescence, Tullahoma. How random! 456 North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. Mon-Fri, 10am-5:30pm.

Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography Since the Sixties at the Getty Center: It seems to be all about documentary photography right now, with two major spaces exhibiting works in that genre (the other one being the Annenberg). Including images of such legends as Sebastiao Salgado and LA’s Lauren Greenfield, the show focuses on photojournalists who transcend their traditional observant role and made their work highly personal. 1200 Getty Center Drive, LA, CA. Tue-Fri 10am-5:30pm, Sat 10am-9pm, Sun 10am-5:30pm. Entrance free, parking is $15, free after 5pm.
