(The book is a narrative with recipes; a spring roll from Mandoline Grill truck.)
It was a good sign of what was to come walking up to the Traveler’s Bookcase (8375 West 3rd Street) last week to find folks sitting on benches out front and the Mandoline Grill truck at the ready. The bookstore had already filled up with people, sipping wine and waiting for author Kim Fay and her sister and photographer Julie Fay Ashborn to read an excerpt and talk about their new book Communion: A Culinary Journey Through Vietnam. It really was a family affair, as the sisters’ father had been grilling all day to provide a sampling of the book’s recipes for guests… (The reading and Mandoline Grill after the jump.)

(People were already lined up at the food truck prior to the event.)
After the reading, we retreated outside to escape the heat and try out the Mandoline Grill truck. The husband and I split a grilled pork Banh Mi ($6), which was an extremely good idea, as these sandwiches are tremendous—12 inch baguettes filled with pork, slivered carrots, pickle slices (that taste cucumber-y), and a smidge of mayo. It was fresh and just right for the hot night. We also ordered vegan spring rolls ($4), which were the perfect crispy on the outside, soft on the inside combination. This was a steal of a meal for two for $10!
