Portraits – Wallflower Advocate Miguel Nelson of Woolly Pockets

by christina

Occupation: Creator of Woolly Pockets flower walls and Smogshoppe event space

Address: woollypocket.com, smogshoppe.com: 2651 South La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90034

Why we like him: I love my garden (admittedly a conglomerate of potted plants because of limited space), and found the possibility of adding to it vertically utterly fantastic. A few questions with Miguel after the jump…

Where are you from? Tuscon, Arizona

How long have you lived here? Seven years

Where do you live in LA? Los Feliz

What do you like best about your neighborhood? It reminds me of Berkeley, where I went to college. The crooked streets, many staircases, and the diversity in architecture. Also, all the different bookstores…

Favorite thing to do in Los Angeles? Walking. I love to walk around in Los Angeles; you discover the most wonderful things that way. It’s really the luxury of living in LA to be able to walk  all year long because of our mild climate. I could spend the whole day just strolling around. It’s a totally underrated experience. Also, the thing that interests me about the city is the human experiences, and you get more face to face encounters when you’re not in your car.

What do you like most about your job? I don’t have a job, I only have different projects I’m working on. What gives me the most satisfaction is when I inspire people through my work to do something creative. The other day this man called me and told me ecstatically about what he did with Woolly Pockets in his living room, and I was thinking: “I have no idea what you’re talking about, but it’s fantastic.”
