“You know we’re reaching out to the press because people still don’t know we offer these reasonably-priced items,” Jennifer Baker tells me. She’s the store manager for Melrose’s Marc by Marc Jacobs store, always bustling at 8410 Melrose Avenue. “I’ll be at parties and people find out what I do and will say, ‘I can’t afford anything there,’ and it couldn’t be further from the truth.”

And, indeed, the boutique is always stocked with loads of well-priced specialty items, restocked with new merch each week, in fact. “There are customers that really follow the specialty items, collect them,” Baker explains. “They see what’s in online, and immediately come in.”

You can see the appeal, especially in financial times such as these, to be able to go into Marc by Marc Jacobs and feel you can afford something, or even perhaps a bag chock full of playful, trinket-y items: Stinky Rat keychains for $1; $19 glass beaded necklace; $24 cheeky tees; $1.50 ‘Remember Saftey First! xxoo, Marc Jacobs’ rubbers; $9 suspenders and much, much more.

The specialty item program (merch that is ‘priced to move’) is headed up by MJ’s partner in the biz Robert Duffy, who travels constantly bringing back his finds, and is aided by specialty items team leader Reed Putlitz. “They keep it really fun,” says Baker. I have to agree—whenever I’m in the area, I always stop in to see what’s in, and there are always customers exploring the packed tables right there with me, contemplating what they might buy, guiltlessly. Savvy, very savvy.

I agree you can find great deals there often. But what’s with the python and leopard keyloops? So 2007. And they’ve had those boots on sale there forever. This ain’t Portland bitches!

But yes I still heart me some Marc by Marc Jacobs. They have great cheap rings and sunglasses at that store, too.
