Portraits – Milliner Louise Green

Occupation: Hat maker and designer

Address: 1616 Cotner Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90025; louisegreen.com

Why we like her: The royal wedding a couple of months ago got even the last of us paying attention to hats. And even though we don’t need any protection against freezing temperatures on our heads, protection against the burning sun is as necessary, and hats are such a stylish option! They have the ability to effortlessly turn your most casual outfit into a stunner  and Louise’s (who’s British by the way) extensive collection is all made in-house in LA. I had the pleasure of getting a tour of her millinery in West LA and as always, it’s great to see such a traditional craft still being honed today. I highly recommend stopping by her shop and checking out her meticulously fabricated pieces! (Find out where Louise gets her vintage pieces after the jump).

(Two examples of Louise’s summer collection: Left, $195; right, $295)

Where are you from? I was born in London England.

How long have you lived here? 28 very happy years. I love LA!

Where do you live in LA? I’m lucky enough to live in Santa Monica on a tiny street that used to be part of the Marion Davies estate.

Favorite restaurant in your hood: In Santa Monica: Being a vegetarian I love Real Food Daily in Downtown Santa Monica. In LA, I love Tara’s Himalayan on Venice Boulevard.

This place makes the best coffee/tea: If I’m having coffee in Santa Monica, I love Peets on Montana but the best coffee in LA has to be from Coffee Bar on Spring Street in Downtown LA.

Coolest store: In Santa Monica, Crossroads on 4th St. In LA, Clever Vintage Downtown, probably one of the best kept secret vintage stores in LA. (By appointment only).

And that’s what I bought there: At Crossroads: an amazing Chan Luu color blocked silk blouse. At Clever Vintage, Blouses, dresses, ’50′s necklaces. I’m obsessed!

First three adjectives that come to mind when describing your  neighborhood: Friendly, sunny, heavenly.

Favorite LA artist: Doni Simons, who has her studio at the Santa Monica Airport. Painter, installation, and performance artist.

Best kept secret about your neighborhood: Rustic Canyon Park and also the many hidden sets of stairs in the Santa Monica Canyon.

When I need a time-out, I go to: Sweat at Krav Maga Worldwide on Olympic Boulevard in West LA. I take bag classes and Crossfit six times a week. Krav Maga is Israeli self defense developed for the Israeli army.

The one thing that’s a must-see in LA: The Self Realization Gardens on Sunset. Be prepared to be charmed.

Why did you pick this particular location for your business? We are located at the busiest intersection in LA and the Louise Green sign can be seen from the 405. There is no better advertising than that. It is also on the Westside and we get the ocean breeze.

Favorite moment at your business: When a customer leaves carrying a hat in a large Louise Green hat box and a huge smile.
