Thanks to Renee Ridgeley of Hands-On Third (8377 West 3rd Street) for letting me know about their current Artist in Residence, architect-turned-handbag-and-shoe designer Shawna Poliquin. When the economy went south and her freelance jobs slowed a bit, Poliquin took a shoemaking class and fell in love with the process. She’s expanded to handbags and iPad cases, all on display and for sale at the crafty shop/workshop through March. Her architectural roots shine through her designs, from the hybrid ballet flat/gladiator/sandal Chimera in leopard or black with patent toe ($350) to the Piscene Sac shown above with “fish gill” detailing to imply the look of exotic skins ($530). And there’s no missing her smart design in the Flat Pack Sac, which starts out flat (great of packing and storing) and is “activated” by a flip of the strap ($200)… (The shoes, more bags, and how to order after the jump.)
(Chimera also comes in styles which incorporate bright colors and beads, also look out for a “blush” hue)
(The simplicity of the Flat Pack Sac is terribly versatile, and not too big with minimal hardware; comes in gray, plum, black, cognac, chocolate, and bronze.)
(iPad Folio is well priced at $69)
